About Squadron 5
Squadron 5 is a senior squadron, composed of members 18 and older, dedicated
primarily to the Emergency Services mission of the CAP. We provide
well-trained, continuously proficient aircrews and mission-ready aircraft to
perform the following missions:
-
Search and Rescue (SAR)
- CAP pilots fly 85% of all inland SAR missions directed by the Air Force
Rescue Coordination Center, saving more than 100 lives each year.
-
Disaster Relief
- CAP volunteers provide support, including air transportation, to local,
state, and national disaster relief agencies.
-
Humanitarian Relief
- CAP transports time-sensitive medical materials in support of humanitarian
organizations such as the Red Cross.
-
Counterdrug Operations
- Through agreements with the USAF, U.S. Customs Service, the DEA, and the
U.S. Forest Service, CAP provides aerial reconnaissance, airborne
communications, and airlift support of law enforcement personnel.
-
Other Missions
- Include Civil Defense missions, state and local government missions, cadet
orientation flights, and aerial route surveys for the Armed Forces.
In performing these missions, CAP operates the world's largest fleet of
civilian aircraft, with CAP pilots flying nearly 130,000 hours each year.
